On January 22, 1981, Rolling Stone magazine published the John Lennon tribute issue with the famous photograph of a naked John Lennon embracing a clothed Yoko Ono.

The renowned photo was taken by Annie Leibovitz in Lennon and Ono’s apartment in New York. She had showed the couple a sketch of the pose she had envisioned. After she showed a Polaroid, Lennon stated that it captured their relationship exactly.

That night, John Lennon was shot and killed outside their Dakota apartment building. The entire Rolling Stone issue was dedicated solely to Lennon. The full interview with Lennon was not published until 2010.
