The Fray, Eisley, and Gomez at Dodge Theater

17 January 2008

By Matt Ballance

My ears rang as screams, claps, and cheers echoed throughout Dodge Theater. The dim of the stage lighting slowly faded until I only saw a faint glow. The rhythmic chanting encore continued until The Fray marched back on stage. The roaring crowd reached out their hands as the band invited fans to join them on stage. Concert security slowly plucked the lucky fans the band had chosen from the excited mob. The band divvied up tambourines and Guitar Hero controllers to all of the chosen fans. The drum beat, then Isaac Slade began to play the piano and sing:

I never knew,
I never knew that everything was falling through
That everyone I knew was waiting on a queue
To turn and run when all I needed was the truth…

The lucky girls on stage burst into tears while beating on their tambourines to the song. The lights bounced off their shinny tearful faces as they sang along.

Throughout the night of July 16, there was an aching energy before the Colorado band hit the stage. A green pulse ran across a large screen on stage while the band walked on. A large, varied age group attended the concert; some adults also chaperoned their children and their friends. Teens and twenties sang as if they wrote the lyrics. The parents and adults quickly got into the flow.

In the middle of their performance, the Fray slowed their pace for an acoustic set. Ben Wysocki, the Fray’s drummer, began his debut of his vocal career with a cover song of Shakira’s “Hips Don’t Lie”. Every now and again, Isaac would pull out a Polaroid camera and take pictures with his band mates and the crowd. He would then throw the picture he just took into the crowd.

The Fray had followed a fast and up coming band, Eisley. The band were about to release their album Combinations on August 14, 2007. Eisley is a family organized band creating a unique indie rock sound. Reminding me a little of Radiohead, Sherri and Stacy Dupree matched their vocals perfectly. In the lobby they had many followers who raved about their music before the concert. Their lyrics met the voices of their fans throughout the theater. The song “Tree Tops” exemplifies the style of music of Eisley. From the opening verse…

When I was a young girl
Trying to find a way above the tree tops,
the tree tops, the tree tops…

…to the voice effects with enchanting humming and the rhythm of the unique drumming.

After Eisley, Gomez, from the United Kingdom, performed with their entertaining accents. The amazing voice of Ben Ottewell singing “How We Operate” rang through rows of concertgoers. Having never heard them before, many Fray fans lined up to buy their CD. The slower sound of the song “Notice” gained my attention as the singer sang:

But I’m not the only guy I know,
And I’m not the only guy I know that you never noticed

Gomez impressed many with their talented vocals and creative lyrics.

The Fray then ended with “Look After You”. The song was played as if through a CD player, when the band tied in “Wonderwall” by Oasis to the end of the song effortlessly. As they walked off stage for the second time, the green pulse again ran across the screen, slowed, and then flat lined ending their flawless perfmance.
