Single Minded: Arcade Fire, Nas, The Clash, Feist and Pearl Jam

15 February 2008

Every Tuesday Single Minded highlights new tracks hitting stores (or the Web) this week. On Fridays, come back for rarities, remixes, mash-ups and more.

Team9, “Black Mirror” [Arcade Fire Remix]
Team9 take a grim Arcade Fire ballad and turn it into a Grandmaster Flash song. Next time out, we’d like to hear them try the reverse.

Various Artists, “Deconstructing Illmatic” [Sample Sources]
Oh Word breaks a classic down to its essential elements, revealing the far-flung (and awesomely implemented) source material for Nas’ Illmatic. To get the source material for any of today’s hip-hop chart-toppers, just call an old cell phone and press record when it starts ringing.

The Clash, “August 17, 1982″ [Live in Jamaica]
In case you’d forgotten how incredible the Clash were, here are eleven reminders.

Sumo vs. Feist, Sumo vs. Lykke Li [Remixes]
Dance producers add sparkle and pop to Canadian folkie Feist and Swedish folkie Lykke Li, establishing a particular pattern very early. Personally, we’re looking forward to the Joni Mitchell hard bass edit.

Jason Anderson, “Leash” [Pearl Jam Cover]
New Hampshire singer-songwriter offers a ragged take on this Pearl Jam deep cut. We’re hereby challenging him to create an entire album comprised of covers of Pearl Jam deep cuts. Mostly just to hear what he does with “Bugs.”
