A 24-year-old man who killed three police officers and wounded two others in the Canadian city of Moncton after quoting the lyrics of a MEGADETH song has pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.
According to CBC News, Justin Bourque could face consecutive life sentences with no chance of parole for 75 years for the three first-degree murder charges.
A sentencing hearing will be held on October 27.
Bourque was arrested on June 6 in a Moncton resident’s backyard following a manhunt that spanned 30 hours.
He posted the lyrics to the MEGADETH song “Hook In Mouth” on his Facebook page just hours before he committed the crimes. On May 5, he posted the lyrics to DETHKLOK‘s “Castratikon”.
According to International Business Times , the lyrics from the song “Hook in Mouth” by MEGADETH allude to a “little man with a big eraser, changing history” with the final lyric of the status stating: “I believe my kingdom will come.”
The chorus of the song spells out “Freedom” in acronym. Other cryptic references include a “cockroach in the concrete” and if you “make a person disappear… no one will ever miss you.”

Back in April, a man suspected of killing five young people at a Calgary, Alberta, Canada house party posted the title of a MEGADETH song, “Dread And The Fugitive Mind”, and album title, “The World Needs A Hero”, on his Facebook page in the hours before the stabbings.
That was not the first time a MEGADETH song had been linked to an act of violence in Canada. The track “A Tout Le Monde”, which originally appeared on the band’s 1994 CD “Youthanasia”, created controversy in September 2006 because the song was cited in an online post by Dawson College killer Kimveer Gill as one of his favorites before his Montreal shooting spree. He killed one student and wounded nineteen others before committing suicide.

CANNIBAL CORPSE will release its new album, “A Skeletal Domain”, on September 16 via Metal Blade Records.
The CANNIBAL CORPSE collective — vocalist George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher, bassist Alex Webster, guitarists Pat O’Brien and Rob Barrett and drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz — approaches each recording session with a honed and precise vision of a band in their third decade of existence. With this new entry to their extensive catalog, they’ve switched gears, opting to work with producer Mark Lewis (THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, DEVILDRIVER) at Audiohammer Studios in Sanford, Florida, after having tracked their previous three outings (“Kill”, “Evisceration Plague”, “Torture”) with Erik Rutan. Boasting twelve-ominous tracks in forty-four spine-fraying minutes, the result is a massive, belligerent, and deliberate aural attack that finds the band at their peak of their notoriously hyper-kinetic, meticulously executed brutality.
Preparation for “A Skeletal Domain” did not vary significantly from previous efforts. “At the end of the day, we’re still making a death metal record, no matter where it’s being recorded,” relays Webster. Mark Lewis offered a slightly different, modern recording approach, but the band stressed that they could not be more pleased with their previous albums with Rutan, and the door is most definitely open to work with him again in the future. Changing producers is something the band has historically done after every few albums, if only to not get too comfortable. CANNIBAL CORPSE also tried to step outside of their comfort zone when it came to songwriting and their musical performances.
“Consistency is often confused with repetition. We are established with what we do as a band, and we could relax and not push ourselves, but we try to push the envelope. That’s what makes this exciting,” Webster adds. “Anyone who really listens to this album with an open mind will hear that it’s not same-old same-old.” Mark Lewis would concur with Webster’s analysis and even goes a step further by claiming that “there are moments on this record that have never happened in musical history.”

Regarding the musical direction of the new CANNIBAL CORPSE material, Webster told Metal Wani: “I think it’s… a dark-sounding album. Which, you know, it’s a death metal album, so, of course, it should be kind of dark and eerie sounding anyway, but I think this one a little more than normal. That was kind of the direction the songwriting went in. Pat [O’Brien, guitar] actually wrote a lot on this album. This will be the first album where Pat wrote more songs than anyone else. He’s really been super motivated, and he’s been writing some great, great material that we’re all really excited about. And some of it, it’s very evil-sounding stuff. So I think our fans will be very happy. There’s nothing on here that’s even a million miles close to being a sellout, you know what I mean?! It’s definitely full-on evil death metal. I think everyone will enjoy it.”

It was in 2006 when, once a year, a group of stellar musicians and stars of rock started meeting up in London for a night of live music. The main intent was to raise money for a charity called The Sunflower Jam.
At first the rumours about these sessions with DEEP PURPLE, Robert Plant, Brian May and Alice Cooper were too good to be true, to the point that a few thought that they were nothing else than an urban legend.
“The Jam”, as it soon started to be called, quickly became a cult night. A real must first of all for the artists themselves, finally free and happy to leave their commercial thoughts outside the venue and able to enjoy playing music together with colleagues, friends and maybe even secret rivals and for the audience, who often could simply not believe their eyes.
The Sunflower Jam started as an idea from Jacky Paice, who very often could count on the drumming of her husband Ian. Who would turn down playing with him?
The first editions were mainly open to guests and music business professionals that would contribute to the charity. Later “The Jam” became too good not to be available for the public.
It is in one of the earlier SFJs that Jon Lord played for the last time with his friends with DEEP PURPLE, duetting in a peaceful “war of Hammonds” with Don Airey, who had replaced Lord in DEEP PURPLE when he decided it was enough with a life spent on the road, and after a lifetime dedicated to rock and roll, Lord left to concentrate to his first love: classical music and the combination of rock elements in it.
Lord sadly passed away in 2012. Considering the amount of respect, friendship and love expressed on any occasion by anybody who had worked, played or simply met Jon, it is not a surprise that the 2014 Jam would be dedicated totally to his music. The night turned out to be an historical moment in rock music: A full orchestra, a director — Paul Mann — crazy enough to give wonderful arrangements to a repertoire going back and forth through fifty years of music, many old friends for an unforgettable night.
All the wonderful musicians who played at the “Celebrating Jon Lord” Sunflower Jam have left a precious mark but how not to mention the 45 minutes finale by DEEP PURPLE, the PURPLE Mk III songs played by Paice with the old friend Glenn Hughes, together with IRON MAIDEN‘s Bruce Dickinson, Rick Wakeman of YES fame, Steve Balsamo (who sang in the late Jon Lord band and in his last studio album “Concerto”), members of THE TEMPERANCE MOVEMENT, ex members of WHITESNAKE, Bernie Marsden and Micky Moody, the “modfather” Paul Weller.
Ian Paice remembers the “Celebrating Jon Lord” night with vivid memory considering the time all the artists had to rehearse the music for the concert (in DEEP PURPLE‘s case two hours the day before the show!), the resulting performance were nothing less than miraculous. A testament to the quality of the players and love for Jon and his works.
“It was like no concert I have ever played,” Paice said. “To a person everyone in the Hall was there for a common purpose to honour a wonderful man and a great musician. The Royal Albert Hall is fairly large venue and can be intimidating, but that evening it was more like a gathering of friends at their local,(if slightly oversized) pub than a regular show.
I believe all the artists, the people in the audience and even the crew helping to make the show work, felt the difference that night.”

In a recent interview with Noisey, Åkerfeldt stated about “Pale Communion”: “Normally when I start writing for a record, I’m a bit nervous. You don’t know whether or not you’re going to be able to come up with something that you like or come up with something at all, to be honest. I was inspired because pretty early on, I wrote a song on the new album — the last song on there, which I ended up being really happy with. So I had some type of guidelines which was more melody, I think.”
He continued: “[2011’s] ‘Heritage’ was somewhat deliberately fucked up all over the place because I love fucked-up-all-over-the-place-type music, but I wanted to do something more melodic with this album, so there’s stronger vocal melodies and more melodies overall for this album. I was pretty consistent with that frame of mind throughout the writing process, so at least I had a plan with this album, and I normally don’t, to be honest.”

“Back To The Front”, the album that was recorded last year by four members of the most recent lineup of the legendary Swedish metal act ENTOMBED — Lars Göran Petrov (vocals), Olle Dahlstedt (drums), Nico Elgstrand (guitar) and Victor Brandt (bass) — was released on August 5 via Century Media Records under the band name ENTOMBED A.D. The CD was recorded at Studio Bohus (ABBA, EUROPE) in Kungälv, Sweden with producer Roberto Laghi (IN FLAMES, HARDCORE SUPERSTAR). The cover artwork was painted by Zbigniew Bielak (WATAIN, VADER).

In a recent interview with Metal Underground, Elgstrand stated about the addition of “A.D.” to the ENTOMBED name: “We’ve had some internal turmoil that resulted in a separation of Alex [Hellid, guitar] from the band. [It] turns out he didn’t wanna make music and tour on it. [We’re] still not sure what the hell he wants to do! When we were about to release the album, he started bringing in lawyers and claimed that the name ENTOMBED belongs to him. Which, of course, it doesn’t, but instead of getting into a lawsuit that would’ve gone on for a long time and wouldn’t have made anyone happy except a bunch of lawyers, we decided to add ‘A.D.’ to the name and get on with what were supposed to do, which is making music and touring as a band. As of now, the name ENTOMBED is on hold for anyone to use until people involved come to a solution. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to happen in the near future.”

Original ENTOMBED members Alex Hellid (guitar) and Ulf “Uffe” Cederlund (guitar) joined forces with former ENTOMBED frontman Orvar Säfström to perform the band’s classic second album, “Clandestine” (1991), on February 1 at Gävle Konserthus in Gävle, Sweden. They were backed by the 65-piece Gävle Symphonic Orchestra and a 40-piece choir.
Hellid did not participate in the writing and recording of “Back To The Front”.
The docu-series “4th And Loud”, which follows the inaugural season of the LA KISS Arena Football League team, premiered on Tuesday, August 5 at 10/9c. The 10-episode (60-minute) series follows team owners Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, of KISS fame, along with additional owners, longtime KISS manager, Doc McGhee, managing partner/owner, Brett Bouchy and president/owner, Schuyler Hoversten, as they and the dedicated players and coaches work to turn L.A.’s first professional football team in years into a winning franchise.
A newly released clip from the show, which premiered by The Wall Street Journal, shows Simmons and Stanley explaining to the Arena Football League team owners why KISS invested in and named a team the LA KISS. Check it out below.

In a recent interview with Finland’s Kaaos TV, SKID ROW guitarist Dave “The Snake” Sabo stated about “Rise Of The Damnation Army – United World Rebellion: Chapter Two”: “[This was] the most fun that I’ve personally had making a SKID ROW record in our history of the band… for a number of reasons.
“We’re afforded a freedom that not many artists get to enjoy. So we do everything on our own schedule. And the writing process was so stripped down and fun.
“[SKID ROW bassist] Rachel [Bolan] and I have been friends and started the band together 28 years ago, and so, after all that amount of time, 28 years later, to be able to sit in a room with this guy, and he with me, and actually have fun creating music, there’s something special to be said about that. And so, that, combined with the fact that we just always seemed like we were on the same page throughout the whole process. [We had] a couple of little disagreements there, but nothing that was detrimental in any way; it was helpful. And every day, we would listen to the music and we’d have the same thoughts: ‘It’s close, but it’s not there yet.’ ‘it’s close, but it’s not there.’ ‘OK, we’re right there. We’re at the door.’ ‘OK, it’s done.’ Everything was just right on the same page. That’s the first time that’s ever happened. And we just had a great experience the whole way through. Everybody really came to the table and loved the music and brought their ‘A’ game. I mean, we were in and done in a couple of weeks, which is amazing. And it wasn’t like we were cutting corners or anything like that. Everyone just practiced the crap out of the music and the songs — we rehearsed really hard — and everyone loved the music so much that they made it their own, and thus, they performed that way. And it is. It’s all of ours’. It’s five guys.”
Asked about the main differences are between last year’s “United World Rebellion: Chapter One” EP and “Rise Of The Damnation Army – United World Rebellion: Chapter Two”, Bolan told Finland’s Kaaos TV: “Well, there’s not many differences except in the recording process. We recorded in a few different places with the first EP, where we recorded the whole thing in the same studio with the second. But we took the same approach to writing and recording. The writing for the first one, I’d say, we labored a little more, because we were trying to go back to our roots, and I know that’s a cliché saying for bands to say, but it was true. And after 25 years, it’s really hard — harder than you would think — to retrace your steps to where you were when you were that 22-year-old kid jamming in front of a mirror and playing your first big gigs or whatever. So we really had to find our roots and rediscover what got us off in the first place, the guys that wrote the first two records, and I think we succeeded in it. That was the biggest difference — I think it was a little harder to write the songs [for the first EP] — but I think what we came out with, the final product, was well worth it.”

DOWN‘s new EP, “Down IV – Part Two”, sold around 10,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 23 on The Billboard 200 chart. Released on May 13 via Down Records/ADA Music, the effort was tracked at Nodferatu’s Lair — iconic vocalist Philip H. Anselmo‘s home studio — and produced by Michael Thompson, Anselmo and DOWN.
Guitarist Bobby Landgraf made his formal stage debut when DOWN headlined Anselmo‘s first annual Housecore Horror Film Festival in front of a packed audience of the faithful in October 2013.
EYEHATEGOD‘s new, self-titled offering studio recording was released in May via Housecore Records. The recording process for the CD started with producer Billy Anderson back in the fold (he recorded 1996’s “Dopesick”). The session saw both producer and band not quite on the same page and at the end, the album was unfinished. A few months later, the band reconvened at longtime friend Phil Anselmo‘s home studio with producer Stephen Berrigan (DOWN). Both Anselmo and Berrigan helped draw out the missing pieces to one of underground metal’s most anticipated albums in years.
An unexpected tragedy occurred shortly upon returning home from a five-week European tour in the fall of 2013: Joey LaCaze passed away due to respiratory failure. An outpouring of condolences and tributes spread online. Fortunately, LaCaze‘s drum tracks were captured by Anderson and appear on the album, creating the definitive tribute for the member of the band who encapsulated best just what EYEHATEGOD was all about; seriously not taking yourself too seriously. New Orleans native, Aaron Hill (MOUNTAIN OF WIZARD, MISSING MONUMENTS), took over for LaCaze without missing a beat, both figuratively and literally.
COAL CHAMBER, the reformed ’90s alt-metal band fronted by current DEVILDRIVER singer Dez Fafara, will make an announcement on Monday, August 11. Speculation is that COAL CHAMBER will reveal that it has signed a new record deal and will shortly begin work on its first studio album since 2002’s “Dark Days”.
Bassist Nadja Peulen rejoined COAL CHAMBER in November 2013. She said in a statement: “I’ve missed my brothers and can’t wait to rock the stage with them again and see all of you!”
Peulen returned to COAL CHAMBER following the departure of Canadian bassist Chela Rhea Harper, who joined the band in late 2011 and toured with the group for nearly two years.
COAL CHAMBER and SEVENDUST last year took part in a U.S. co-headlining tour. Also appearing on the bill was LACUNA COIL.
In an interview with the WGRD 97.9 FM radio station in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Dez Fafara stated about the possibility of new music from COAL CHAMBER: “[In September 2012], [guitarist Miguel Rascón and drummer Mike Cox] sent me some new tunes and said, ‘Hey, would you ever think about doing a new record? Here’s some new tunes.’ And they were absolutely killer. They were moving forward with their sound, but yet you could tell it was COAL CHAMBER, but it wasn’t so linear.”
Regarding why neither of the two former COAL CHAMBER bassists — Nadja Peulen or Rayna Foss — had been involved in the band’s reunion up until the end of last year, Dez told Full Metal Jackie in a separate interview, “Rayna was not [asked to be a part of it]. Rayna has been out of the band for a very long time. We did speak to Nadja. She [had] other things going and it wasn’t really in the headspace where we were at as a band.”
COAL CHAMBER rose to prominence with a gold-certified debut album in 1997 that established the group as one of the most promising bands on the then-emerging, so-called “nu metal” scene.
Peulen replaced Foss in 1999 during Rayna‘s pregnancy for almost 12 months while the band was on the road supporting its second album, “Chamber Music”. Rayna came back to the band after her pregnancy leave and recorded COAL CHAMBER‘s third album, “Dark Days”. Shortly after recording “Dark Days”, Rayna quit the band and Nadja was recruited for the touring cycle that followed the CD’s release. The band broke up during the “Dark Days” tour in 2002 and reunited nine years later.

AVENGED SEVENFOLD‘s headlining concert at the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival last night (Thursday, August 7) at OKC Downtown Airpark in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma was reportedly delayed mid-performance by a few minutes after a fan climbed to the top of the side wing of stage, creating a safety hazard. AVENGED SEVENFOLD‘s latest album, “Hail To The King”, was certified gold on July 16 by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association Of America) for shipments in excess of 500,000 copies. Released last year, it was the band’s second straight CD to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard chart, following 2010’s “Nightmare”.
The latest effort was recorded after the AVENGED SEVENFOLD bandmembers immersed themselves in the music of two classic LPs: METALLICA‘s Black Album and GUNS N’ ROSES‘ “Appetite For Destruction”.
“The BLACK SABBATH, AC/DC, ZEPPELIN Influence comes through,” AVENGED SEVENFOLD lead guitarist Synyster Gates told TimesLeader.com about “Hail To The King”. “We wanted to create space rather than just fill up every song with four bridges and three choruses and vocal harmonies everywhere, with guitar duels going on. The goal was to focus on the songwriting and the arrangements.”
“Hail To The King” marked AVENGED SEVENFOLD‘s full-length debut with new drummer Arin llejay, whom Gates described to TimesLeader.com as “one of the most tasteful drummers I’ve heard in my life… He’s got that caveman, barbaric huge groove philosophy that we were trying to go for on this record. He’s really got it in his heart and soul. We took the approach of wanting a hungry young kid who could suddenly come out of nowhere and play in front of 50,000 people. He really stepped up.”
AVENGED SEVENFOLD guitarist Zacky Vengeance told Billboard.com that the band will take “a real quick trip to Japan” after Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival ends on August 10 and then plans to come off the road in order to start working on a follow-up to “Hail To The King”.
“I think once we get home, the ideas are going to start brewing,” Vengeance says. “I know Syn‘s been writing a ton purely for fun, trying different styles, recording backstage, keeping himself busy. I’ve been thinking of all sorts of ideas, listening to tons of different music to get inspiration — as have all of us. And being on tour, I’m so inspired. Seeing bands like BODY COUNT with Ice-T out there, they’re so old-school and riff-based and over the top and slightly offensive and it’s fuckin’ awesome. So there’s tons of inspiration that I know we’ll be drawing from.”
AVENGED SEVENFOLD and KORN are co-headlining this year’s Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, which kicked off its annual run on July 5 in Devore, California.

AVENGED SEVENFOLD will reissue its breakthrough second album, “Waking The Fallen”, in a new special edition on August 26. “Waking The Fallen: Resurrected” will include a total of 23 tracks, including 11 never-before-heard songs, new artwork, the original first cut of the music video for “Unholy Confessions” and a 30-minute film featuring the present-day band.

APOCALYPTICA is putting the finishing touches on its eighth full-length studio album, to be released in early 2015.
Following the release of “7th Symphony”, APOCALYPTICA took a break from the standard album cycle in 2013 to pursue a range of musical projects. While Eicca Toppinen switched to drums in his side band CHERRY AND THE VIPERS, Mikko Sirén played his instrument on the new EMIGRATE album, Richard Kruspe‘s (RAMMSTEIN) project. Mikko also performed with Cheek, Finland’s biggest hip-hop artist, selling out Helsinki’s Olympic Stadium twice. Paavo Lötjönen collaborated with Tipe Johnson (LENINGRAD COWBOYS, APOCALYPTICA) and Perttu Kivilaakso earned the feuilleton’s acclaim with celebrated chamber music appearances. Additionally, APOCALYPTICA composed new material and performed live in the multimedia event “Wagner Reloaded” by award-winning choreographer Gregor Seyffert.
Earlier this year, APOCALYPTICA‘s latest project, “Apocalyptic Symphony”, embarked on its first-ever tour with a classical ensemble, the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra.
“We’re in perfect shape,” Toppinen states, “and still hungry for the future of making music together. If you want to try new things, you’ll never know where you end up. But we’re motivated and our heads are full of fresh ideas.”
Having collaborated with artists like Gavin Rossdale (BUSH), Dave Lombardo (SLAYER) and Ville Valo (HIM) on past studio albums, APOCALYPTICA have now taken on a new musical challenge: For the upcoming LP, the band is working with Franky Perez as exclusive singer on the vocal tracks — this time not only during production, but for the whole cycle, including the tour. Perez released his debut in 2003, later teaming up with SYSTEM OF A DOWN‘s Daron Malakian and John Dolmayan as SCARS ON BROADWAY. In 2009, Perez handled vocals for Slash‘s solo band, followed by collaborations with Dave Kushner (VELVET REVOLVER) as well as Scott Shriner (WEEZER), Joey Castillo (QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE) and Dave Warren (“The Simpsons”) as PUSHER JONES. After being honored as vocalist for THE DOORS at the L.A. Sunset Strip Music Festival, he released his latest solo album, “Addict”, in 2013. For APOCALYPTICA, working with Perez on the entire project elevates the musical vision to a new level of coherence between studio production and live performance, as well as renewing the focus on the band’s homogeneity after the recent feature projects.
The release of APOCALYPTICA new album will be followed by an extensive live tour.
